The short answer
Most research on melatonin for sleep onset uses doses between about 0.5 mg and 5 mg. A great many products on the shelf contain 10 mg or more.
More melatonin is not more sleep. Melatonin is a timing signal, not a sedative. Above a certain point you are not getting a stronger effect — you are getting a longer one, which is how people end up groggy the next morning.
We sell a 10 mg product. We will come back to that, honestly, further down.
What melatonin actually does
Melatonin is a hormone your body produces in the evening as light fades. It does not knock you out. It tells your body that night has arrived.
That distinction explains a lot of disappointed reviews. People take melatonin expecting a sleeping pill, feel no heaviness, conclude it "does not work", and take more next time. That is the wrong mental model, and taking more does not fix it.

Why higher doses are so common on shelves
Largely because a bigger number looks like better value. In the United States melatonin is sold as a dietary supplement, so dose is a formulation decision rather than a prescribed amount.
The practical consequence of a high dose is that melatonin stays elevated longer into the night, and some people feel that as morning grogginess.
What this means for our product
RestWell PM provides 10 mg of melatonin per two-capsule serving, alongside vitamin B6, calcium, magnesium and a 905 mg blend including L-tryptophan, chamomile, lemon balm, passion flower, L-theanine, ashwagandha and GABA.
That is at the higher end, and we would rather say so than let you discover it. If you have not taken melatonin before, that is worth a conversation with a pharmacist or clinician before you start — particularly if you take other medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have an existing condition. The label says the same thing, and it means it.
We are not going to tell you to take a different amount than the label directs. We are telling you what the number means so you can decide whether this is the right product for you at all.
Things that matter more than the dose
Honestly, if sleep is the problem, these move the needle further than any capsule:
- A consistent wake time, including weekends. This is the single biggest lever most people have.
- Light in the morning, dim light in the evening. Melatonin is a light signal, so you can move it without a bottle.
- Caffeine timing. It has a long half-life; an afternoon coffee is still working at bedtime.
- A cool, dark room. Unglamorous, and it works.
A supplement is a small addition to those, not a substitute for them.
When not to self-treat
If you cannot sleep for weeks at a time, wake unrefreshed no matter how long you are in bed, or snore heavily and wake gasping, that is a medical conversation, not a supplement purchase. Sleep apnoea and insomnia are conditions with real treatments, and no dietary supplement addresses either.
An honest note on evidence
Everything above is research about melatonin, from public health sources. It is not evidence about RestWell PM. No clinical trials have been run on this formula, and we will not imply otherwise.
