How to Choose a Soap Bar

The short answer

Three questions get you there: how does your skin behave, how much texture do you want, and what do you want it to smell like? Everything else is preference.

Bar soap is not complicated, and most of the advice written about it exists to make it seem complicated.

Question 1 — how does your skin behave after washing?

If your skin feels tight or itchy after a shower, you want a bar with a higher proportion of moisturising oils and no strong essential oils. SoftWell Oat Milk + Honey is labelled moisturizing, gentle exfoliation for sensitive skin and is the gentlest starting point.

If your skin feels fine or oily, you have the full range available. Essential-oil bars like Charcoal with peppermint and tea tree will suit you.

If you react to things, read the ingredient list before buying rather than after. Every bar's full list is on its product page. Tea tree, peppermint and fragrance are the three most common culprits.

Question 2 — how much texture do you want?

Smooth — a plain bar with no added grit. Best for face, and for anyone who finds scrubbing uncomfortable.

Light texture — oatmeal or similar. Mild physical exfoliation you barely notice. Oat Milk + Honey sits here.

Properly exfoliating — coffee, salt or seed-based bars. Good for hands, feet, elbows. Not usually what you want on your face.

Question 3 — what should it smell like?

This is the one people pretend does not matter and then choose on anyway.

  • Sweet and warm — oat milk and honey, vanilla
  • Cold and sharp — peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus, charcoal bars
  • Herbal and calm — lavender, sandalwood
  • Clean and neutral — unscented or lightly scented

A bar you enjoy smelling is a bar you use. That is not a trivial consideration.

A few practical things worth knowing

Handmade bars cost more than supermarket bars. That is real and worth being straight about. A $14.99 bar is not competing with a multipack on price. It is competing on what is in it and how it feels.

A 4 oz bar lasts roughly three to five weeks with daily use — which works out around 40 to 70 cents a day. We wrote about what decides where you land in that range, because it is almost entirely down to whether the bar dries out between uses.

Buy one before you buy three. Scent is personal and nobody can pick it for you. A single bar is the sensible test.

If you want a starting point

One thing we will not tell you

No bar of soap treats a skin condition. These are cosmetic cleansing bars. If something on your skin is painful, spreading, or not going away, that is a reason to see a clinician — not to try a different soap.

Shipping is $4.95 on U.S. orders under $100 and free over $100. Orders process in 1–3 business days; delivery is typically 5–8 business days.
