GutWell or Probiotic 40 Billion: Which One Do You Need?

The short answer

GutWell is a broad daily digestive formula. Probiotic 40 Billion is a high-count probiotic. They overlap less than the names suggest.

  • Choose GutWell if you want one capsule-based step covering several bases — apple cider vinegar, a prebiotic, a digestive-enzyme blend and a probiotic strain.
  • Choose GutBiome 20 or Probiotic 40 Billion if probiotics specifically are what you are after, at a much higher CFU count.

The number that matters most

This is the part most product pages do not make easy to compare.

GutWell provides 1 billion CFU of Lactobacillus acidophilus LA85 per two-capsule serving, at time of manufacture. Probiotic 40 Billion provides, as the name says, forty times that.

That is not a criticism of GutWell. It is simply not primarily a probiotic — the probiotic is one of four components. If you came looking for a probiotic, you want one of the probiotic products.

What is actually in GutWell

Per two-capsule serving:

  • 1,000 mg organic apple cider vinegar powder — the largest part of the formula
  • 200 mg inulin from Jerusalem artichoke root — the prebiotic
  • 100 mg DigeZyme® — a digestive-enzyme blend
  • 1 billion CFU L. acidophilus LA85

60 capsules, 30 servings, $29.99. Labelled to promote digestive health and support normal bowel movements.*

Prebiotic, probiotic, enzyme — what the words mean

Worth clearing up, because they get used interchangeably and they are not the same:

  • Probiotic — live bacteria. Measured in CFU, colony-forming units.
  • Prebiotic — fibre that feeds bacteria already present. Inulin is one.
  • Digestive enzyme — helps break food down. Unrelated to bacteria.

GutWell contains all three. The probiotic-specific products concentrate on the first.

On "CFU at time of manufacture"

You will see that phrase on nearly every probiotic, ours included. It means the count was accurate when the product was made. Live cultures decline over time and with heat, so what reaches you depends on storage and shelf time.

It is an industry-standard way of labelling, not a loophole — but it is worth understanding what you are reading, and worth storing the bottle somewhere cool and dry.

What neither of these does

Neither product treats a digestive condition. If you have persistent pain, blood, unexplained weight loss, or symptoms that have gone on for weeks, that is a doctor's appointment, not a supplement decision. IBS, IBD and coeliac disease are diagnoses with real treatments.

An honest note on evidence

Research on probiotics, prebiotics and enzymes is research about those ingredients, not about these formulas. We have run no trials on either product.
