Three body-care products with unusually short ingredient lists — and a few claims worth correcting.
SheaWell Raw Shea Butter — $20.75, 4 oz
One ingredient: Organic Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter. That is the entire list.
At $5.19 per ounce it is the best value moisturiser we sell — a quarter the price per ounce of the tallow creams — and it works on skin and hair alike.
Worth knowing:
- Texture changes with temperature. Store at 60–70°F and let it come to room temperature before use. Cold shea is hard and grainy; warm it between your palms.
- A little goes a long way. Raw shea is thick — far thicker than a lotion. Most people use far too much the first time and conclude it is greasy.
- Shea comes from the nut of the shea tree. Allergic reactions are considered rare, and shea butter is generally well tolerated even by many people with tree nut allergies — but if you have a severe nut allergy, ask your doctor rather than taking our word for it.
- It has a natural, faintly nutty smell. That is raw shea. It is not a defect.
- Pregnant or lactating people should consult a doctor before use, per our label.
The product page mentions vitamins A and E. These occur naturally in shea — they are not added at measured amounts, and our own page says so.
ClarityWell Dead Sea Mud — $31.90, 7 oz
Three ingredients: Dead Sea Mud (Silt), Maris Aqua (Dead Sea Water), Acribio OCS 1%.
A twice-weekly mask: thin layer on clean skin, avoid eyes and lips, leave 10–12 minutes or until dry, remove with warm water in circular motions, pat dry, follow with moisturiser.
What we are trimming back
Our page calls it a "pore reducer" and says it gives "tighter, more youthful-looking skin."
Nothing reduces pore size. Pore diameter is largely genetic. A clay or mud mask absorbs surface oil, which makes pores look less obvious for a while — that is a real, temporary appearance effect and a perfectly good reason to use a mask. It is not a reduction.
The "tightening" feeling is the mask drying and contracting on your skin. It is a sensation, not a change in your skin.
It also does not treat acne, blackheads or any skin condition. If blackheads are your main concern, a mask twice a week is a pleasant ritual, not a treatment plan.
One genuine tip
Do not let it dry to cracking. "Until dry" in our directions means dry, not tight and flaking — over-drying a mud mask is how people end up with irritated skin from something meant to be gentle. If it starts to feel uncomfortable, rinse it off early.
MoveWell Recovery Cream — $39.85, 4 oz
A menthol cream for massaging into muscles, joints and tendons, up to four times a day.
Two things on the label
It contains sesame seed oil. Sesame is a recognised major allergen. If you have a sesame allergy, do not use this.
It contains menthol, which is what produces the cooling sensation. Menthol is not appropriate for young children, and it should not go near eyes or broken skin. Our label says explicitly: not for use on open wounds or broken skin, and wash hands thoroughly after use.
Washing your hands matters — menthol transferred to your eyes later is genuinely unpleasant.
What it is and is not
Our own product page is careful, and we will stay inside it: this is a cosmetic skincare product that hydrates skin and provides a cooling, comfortable sensation. It is aloe-based, with coconut oil, shea butter, olive oil, rosehip oil and menthol.
It is not a pain reliever. It does not treat muscle pain, joint pain, arthritis, inflammation or injury. Menthol products that make pain claims are regulated differently from cosmetics, and this is sold as a cosmetic. If something hurts enough that you are reaching for a cream four times a day, that is worth a doctor's opinion.
Despite the name, it is a different product from the MoveWell joint supplement — which has its own article, including a shellfish note.
Quick picks
- Best value moisturiser: SheaWell, by a distance
- A weekly ritual: Dead Sea Mud
- Cooling sensation after training: MoveWell Recovery Cream — if you have no sesame allergy
All three: external use only, avoid eyes, discontinue if irritation occurs.
