We carry three tallow creams at $27.00 each, 2 oz:
The first ingredient is beef tallow
Tallow is rendered beef fat. That is what this product is built on, and the name says so — but plenty of people see "tallow cream" in a wellness shop and do not connect it to cattle.
So, plainly: this is an animal product. It is not vegan and it is not vegetarian. If you avoid animal-derived ingredients, SheaWell Raw Shea Butter is the plant-based equivalent in our range and costs less.
One note on the badges: these products carry a "cruelty-free" badge, which in cosmetics conventionally refers to animal testing rather than animal ingredients. We would rather explain that than let it be read as "contains no animal products", because it plainly does.
Why anyone uses tallow
The genuine case for it: tallow's fatty acid profile is similar to the lipids human skin produces, which is why people with very dry or easily irritated skin often find it sits well. It is an old ingredient that has come back for real reasons, not just nostalgia.
It is also extremely simple. The Orange & Bergamot version is five ingredients:
Beef Tallow, Organic Olive Fruit Oil, Organic Jojoba Seed Oil, Organic Orange Peel Oil, Organic Bergamot Peel Oil.
No preservative, no emulsifier, no water. A waterless, oil-based product does not need a preservative the way a water-based cream does — that is why the list can be this short.
It melts at 85°F. Plan for that.
From our own label: "Tallow melts at 85 degrees F. Store jar in a cool, dark location. If melted, oils may separate. Gently mix and refrigerate if necessary."
That is a real practical consideration, not a footnote:
- Do not leave it in a car in summer. 85°F is not hot.
- A steamy bathroom shelf is a poor home for it.
- If it does melt and separate, it is not ruined — stir it and refrigerate.
- Texture will change between winter and summer. That is normal for a tallow product.
The citrus oils, and one thing worth knowing
The Orange & Bergamot version contains bergamot peel oil and orange peel oil.
Citrus peel oils — bergamot especially — are associated with photosensitivity: they can make skin more reactive to sunlight. This is a leave-on product, which is exactly the situation where that matters most, unlike a rinse-off soap.
Practical advice: use the citrus version at night, or on areas that stay covered, and wear sunscreen on exposed skin as you should anyway. If you want a tallow cream for daytime face use, the Lemongrass & Lavender or Peaceful Night versions avoid citrus.
All three contain essential oils, so none is genuinely unscented despite the "fragrance-free" badge — that badge refers to added synthetic fragrance, not to the absence of scent.
On "chemical-free"
Our product page says the cream "contains no synthetic ingredients or preservatives compared to commercial skincare products."
The first half is accurate and a fair selling point. The phrase "chemical-free", though, is not meaningful — everything is a chemical, including beef tallow and olive oil. What is true and worth saying is that this is a short, simple, preservative-free, waterless formula. That is the honest version of the claim.
What it does, and does not
It moisturises dry skin. It softens rough patches. It is suitable for sensitive skin types and most people find it comfortable.
It does not treat eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis or any skin condition. The vitamins A, D, E and K mentioned on the page are naturally occurring in tallow, not added at measured amounts, and no specific effect is claimed for them.
How to use it
Apply to fingertips and massage into skin; it absorbs over a few minutes. A 2 oz jar is small, but tallow is rich — you need far less than you would of a water-based lotion. Start with less than you think.
Store cool and dark, away from direct sunlight and heat.
Tallow or shea?
| Tallow Cream | SheaWell Raw Shea Butter | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $27.00 | $20.75 |
| Size | 2 oz | 4 oz |
| Per ounce | $13.50 | $5.19 |
| Source | Beef | Plant |
| Scented? | Yes, essential oils | No |
Shea is a quarter of the price per ounce, plant-based and unscented. Tallow is the one to try if shea has not worked for you or you specifically want the animal-lipid profile.
