NutraMoss: What Is Actually in Sea Moss, and the Iodine Question Nobody Answers

NutraMoss is $25.90 for 60 capsules — 30 two-capsule servings. It has four ingredients, which is unusually few, and that makes it one of the easier products in the catalogue to explain honestly.

The whole formula

Per 2-capsule serving:

  • Organic Irish moss (Chondrus crispus, whole plant) — 500 mg
  • Organic bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus, whole plant) — 500 mg
  • Organic burdock (Arctium lappa, root) — 400 mg
  • BioPerine® black pepper extract (Piper nigrum, fruit) — 5 mg

Other ingredient: pullulan capsules. That is the complete list. No proprietary blend, no undisclosed amounts, no filler worth arguing about.

The iodine question, stated plainly

Irish moss and bladderwrack are both seaweeds, and seaweeds contain iodine. The NutraMoss label does not state how much iodine is in a serving.

That is not a defect specific to this product — most sea moss supplements on the market do not declare an iodine amount either, because the content varies with where and when the seaweed was harvested. But it is a real gap, and you deserve to hear it from us rather than find out later.

Bladderwrack in particular is known as a comparatively concentrated dietary source of iodine. Iodine is an essential nutrient, and it is also one where the gap between "enough" and "too much" is narrower than for most nutrients.

What that means for you, concretely:

  • If you have a diagnosed thyroid condition — hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's, Graves', a nodule, or a history of thyroid surgery — talk to the doctor who manages it before taking this product. Bring the ingredient list.
  • If you take thyroid medication such as levothyroxine, the same applies.
  • If you are pregnant or nursing, iodine needs change, and this is a conversation for your own clinician.
  • If you already take a multivitamin containing iodine, or eat seaweed regularly, the amounts add together and nobody can total them from these labels.

We are not telling you the product is unsafe. We are telling you the label does not contain the one number those situations require, so the decision has to be made with someone who knows your history.

What the label does claim

Three support claims, and they are modest ones:

  • Helps support energy levels*
  • Supports brain and nerve health*
  • Supports normal immune function*

What it does not claim, despite what you will read elsewhere: the approved label does not support claims that this formula treats thyroid conditions, digestive conditions, skin conditions, the lymphatic system, or inflammation. Sea moss is marketed very aggressively online, and a great deal of what is said about it goes well past what any label will support. We are not repeating any of it.

Why burdock and black pepper are in there

Burdock root (400 mg) is the traditional third ingredient in the sea moss and bladderwrack combination — the three are sold together so consistently that the trio has become the standard format for this category.

BioPerine® is a branded black pepper fruit extract, included at 5 mg. It appears in a great many supplements, and the reason it is a named brand rather than generic black pepper is that the branded version is standardized to a consistent concentration. Five milligrams is a small amount by design; it is not there as an active botanical in its own right.

What "organic" covers here

The label identifies the Irish moss, the bladderwrack and the burdock as organic. The BioPerine® is not described that way. That is a precise distinction from the panel, and it is the only claim about sourcing we will make — we are not going to tell you which coastline the seaweed came from, because we do not know.

Gel or capsules?

Sea moss is sold two ways: as a refrigerated gel you spoon into food, and as capsules. NutraMoss is capsules.

The practical trade-off, with no sales pitch attached: gel has to be refrigerated and used within a couple of weeks, and the dose is whatever you spoon out. Capsules are shelf-stable, give you a known 500 mg of Irish moss per serving, and taste like nothing. If the daily-routine part is what usually defeats you, capsules are the format that survives a busy week. If you specifically want the gel, this is not that product.

How to take it

Two capsules once daily, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal, or as directed by your healthcare professional. One bottle is a 30-day supply at that rate.

Do not exceed the recommended dose. Consult a physician before use if pregnant, nursing, under 18, or if you have a medical condition.
