Charcoal Soap: What Activated Charcoal Actually Does in a Bar

The short answer

SoftWell Charcoal is a 4 oz face-and-body cleansing bar made with activated charcoal, peppermint essential oil and tea tree essential oil. It is $14.99.

Activated charcoal is what makes the bar black, and it gives the bar its distinctive ingredient profile. It is a cosmetic cleansing bar. It is not an acne treatment, and we are not going to tell you it is.

What activated charcoal is

Activated charcoal is carbon that has been processed to make it extremely porous. That porosity is why it turns up in water filters and in emergency medicine — it has a very large surface area relative to its size.

In a soap bar, it is part of the formulation and the reason the bar is black rather than cream-coloured.

What it does not do

This is where most charcoal soap marketing goes wrong, so here it is plainly:

  • It does not "detox" your skin. Skin is not detoxified by washing.
  • It does not pull dirt out of pores. A bar is on your skin for seconds, then rinsed off.
  • It is not an acne treatment. If you are treating acne, that is a conversation with a clinician or a pharmacist, not a soap purchase.

What it does is clean the surface of wet skin with a traditional soap lather, the same as any well-made bar — with a sharp peppermint and tea tree scent and a colour that people like.

The peppermint and tea tree

Both are essential oils, and both are doing scent work here. The combination reads as bright and cold rather than sweet, which is why this bar tends to suit people who find oat milk and honey too soft.

If you have reacted to tea tree oil before, read the full ingredient list before buying. It is on the product page.

What is on the label

  • Net weight: 4 oz (113 g)
  • Saponified oils: organic palm, organic coconut, organic sunflower, organic extra virgin olive
  • Peppermint essential oil, tea tree essential oil, activated charcoal
  • Fair Trade sustainable palm; Fair Trade coconut
  • Made in the USA

Who it suits

  • Anyone who wants a crisp, cold-smelling bar rather than a sweet one
  • Anyone who likes the look and feel of a charcoal bar
  • Face and body use

Who it does not

If you have very dry or reactive skin, the Oat Milk + Honey bar is the gentler choice — it is labelled moisturizing, gentle exfoliation for sensitive skin. If you dislike strong mint scents, pick almost anything else.

How to use it, and make it last

Add warm water, work the bar into a thick lather, cleanse wet skin, rinse thoroughly. Keep the bar dry between uses — on a draining dish and out of the direct spray. That single habit is the difference between a bar lasting three weeks and five.

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes; rinse thoroughly with clean water if that happens. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.
