Women's Vitality Formula — $30.50, 60 capsules, two daily. A menopause and menstrual-wellness botanical blend, and one where the cautions genuinely matter.
The ingredients, with amounts — which is a good sign
Unusually for this category, every botanical has a stated amount:
- Red Clover Aerial Parts Extract: 400 mg
- Sage Leaf Extract (2.5%): 200 mg
- Black Cohosh Root Extract: 160 mg
- Dong Quai Root Extract (1%): 150 mg
- Licorice Root Extract (1%): 150 mg
- Chasteberry Fruit Extract (0.5%): 50 mg
- Blessed Thistle Herb Powder: 50 mg
- Red Raspberry Fruit Powder: 50 mg
- Soy Isoflavones: 30 mg
- Wild Yam Root Extract (16%): 15 mg
- trans-Resveratrol: 1 mg
Other ingredients: gelatin (bovine), microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide.
The capsule is bovine gelatin, so this is not vegetarian or vegan.
If you have a hormone-sensitive condition, talk to your doctor first
This is the most important paragraph here.
Soy isoflavones and red clover are phytoestrogens — plant compounds that can interact with oestrogen receptors in the body. Red clover is the largest single ingredient in the formula at 400 mg.
If you have or have had breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, endometriosis or uterine fibroids — or if there is a strong family history — do not start this without talking to the doctor who manages that. Phytoestrogens are a genuine question in those situations, not a box to tick.
The same applies if you take tamoxifen, an aromatase inhibitor, hormone replacement therapy, or hormonal contraception.
Black cohosh and the liver
Black cohosh is one of the better-known menopause botanicals, and it comes with a documented caution: there are published case reports of liver injury associated with black cohosh supplements.
It appears to be uncommon, and the reports do not establish cause in every case. But it is well enough recognised that it belongs on this page. If you have liver disease, talk to your doctor before taking this. If you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness or abdominal pain, stop and seek medical advice.
The same caution applies to the ashwagandha in our CalmWell product — two different herbs, same category of concern.
Three more interactions worth raising
- Dong quai — traditionally associated with effects on bleeding. If you take warfarin or any blood thinner, ask your doctor. Also avoid before surgery.
- Licorice root, 150 mg — can raise blood pressure and lower potassium with regular use. Relevant if you have hypertension, heart or kidney disease, or take a diuretic.
- Chasteberry (vitex) — traditionally used for menstrual cycle support, and it may interact with hormonal medication and dopamine-related medication.
Do not take this if you are pregnant or trying to conceive
Several ingredients here — dong quai, black cohosh and chasteberry among them — are conventionally avoided in pregnancy. Our label says to consult a physician; for this particular combination we would put it more strongly. If you are pregnant, nursing, or trying to conceive, do not start this without medical advice.
What it claims
Supports normal hormonal balance, reproductive health and overall well-being, and is traditionally used for menstrual and menopausal wellness.* Structure/function language.
It does not treat menopause, PMS, PCOS, endometriosis, infertility or any condition. Menopause in particular has effective medical treatments, and if symptoms are affecting your life, that conversation with a doctor will achieve more than a bottle of botanicals. We would rather say so.
Practical notes
Two capsules daily, preferably with meals. 60 capsules is a 30-day supply. Botanical formulas of this type are generally assessed over weeks, not days.
Manufactured in a facility that may also process milk, soy, wheat, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and crustacean shellfish.
Do not exceed the recommended dose. Not for anyone under 18.
