CalmWell Ashwagandha: Two Ingredients, 1,300 mg a Day, and Four Cautions Worth Reading

CalmWell Organic Ashwagandha with Black Pepper — $23.90, 60 capsules. Two ingredients. Simple product, but the one in our range where the cautions deserve more room than the benefits.

What is in it

Per capsule:

  • Organic ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) root: 650 mg
  • Organic black pepper (Piper nigrum) fruit: 5 mg
  • Other ingredient: pullulan capsule

That is the whole formula. No proprietary blend, no filler worth arguing about, and a pullulan capsule rather than gelatin — so the shell is vegetarian.

Directions are one capsule twice daily, which is 1,300 mg of ashwagandha root per day. Note that the panel lists 60 servings but the directions say two a day, so a bottle is a 30-day supply, not 60.

Root, not extract — and why that changes the number

This is root powder, not a standardised extract. Many ashwagandha studies use concentrated extracts standardised to withanolides, where a much smaller milligram figure represents a stronger dose.

So 650 mg of root powder is not equivalent to 650 mg of a standardised extract, and we are not going to let the bigger number imply otherwise. If you are comparing against a product that lists a withanolide percentage, you are comparing two different things.

The black pepper

5 mg of organic black pepper fruit. Black pepper is commonly included in botanical formulas on the basis of absorption. Our own product page says plainly that no unverified absorption promise is made, and we will hold that line — it is there, it is 5 mg, and we are not going to quantify a benefit the label does not state.

Four things to take seriously

1. Thyroid

Ashwagandha has been associated with changes in thyroid hormone levels. If you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication such as levothyroxine, talk to the doctor managing it before starting. This is the most common real-world interaction with this herb.

2. Pregnancy

Ashwagandha is traditionally avoided in pregnancy. Do not take it if you are pregnant, and ask a clinician if you are nursing or trying to conceive.

3. Liver

There are published case reports of liver injury associated with ashwagandha supplements. It appears to be uncommon, and reports do not establish that the herb caused it in every case — but it is documented, it is not fringe, and you should know. If you have liver disease, talk to your doctor first. If you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual fatigue or abdominal pain, stop taking it and seek medical advice.

4. Sedatives, immunosuppressants and autoimmune conditions

Ashwagandha may add to the effect of sedative medication. It may also interact with immunosuppressants, and people with autoimmune conditions are usually advised to check first. If you take prescription medication of any kind, this is one to run past a pharmacist.

What the label claims — and what it does not

The approved label supports one thing: supports overall health.* That is deliberately modest, and it is all we are going to say.

Ashwagandha is marketed everywhere for stress, anxiety, cortisol, sleep and testosterone. Our label does not support any of those claims, and our own product page states directly that it is not intended to treat stress or anxiety. If you are dealing with anxiety, that is worth proper care — a capsule is not a substitute for it.

How to take it

One capsule twice daily, 20–30 minutes before a meal with 8 oz of water, or as directed by a healthcare professional. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Consult a physician before use if pregnant, nursing, under 18, or if you have a medical condition. Keep out of reach of children; store cool and dry.
