Coconut Beach Soap: Coconut Oil Is in Every Bar — Here Is What Is Different About This One

Coconut Beach Soap — $14.99, 4 oz. There is a small confusion built into this bar's name, and clearing it up is genuinely useful.

Every bar we sell contains coconut oil

Look at the base of almost any SoftWell bar: Saponified Oils (Olive, Palm, Coconut, Shea). Coconut oil is in Calming Lavender, Breathe Clear, Slumber, Rich Sandalwood and the rest.

So "Coconut Beach" is not about having coconut oil in it. It is about the scent. The full list:

Saponified Oils (Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Organic Palm Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Shea Butter), Fragrance.

Which is, ingredient for ingredient, the same bar as Rich Sandalwood with a different scent in it.

What coconut oil actually does in soap

Since it is in everything, it is worth knowing what it is for. In soapmaking, coconut oil is the lather ingredient. It produces big, fast, bubbly foam, and it makes a hard bar that lasts.

The trade-off: coconut oil is also cleansing to the point of being stripping if you use too much of it. That is why handmade soap is a blend — olive oil brings mildness, shea butter brings richness, coconut brings lather and hardness, and the soapmaker balances them. A bar that was 100% coconut oil would lather magnificently and leave your skin squeaking.

This is the single most useful thing to understand about reading a soap label, and it applies to every bar you will ever buy.

The scent

Warm, sweet, tropical — coconut in the suntan-lotion-and-holiday sense rather than the fresh-coconut sense. It is the most straightforwardly *pleasant* bar in the range and the one most likely to be liked by someone who has no opinions about soap.

As with Rich Sandalwood, the label says Fragrance — an undisclosed blend. If you need to know exactly what is scenting your soap, the essential-oil bars (Breathe Clear, Calming Lavender, Slumber, Lemongrass & Sage) are where to look. We explain what that word does and does not disclose in the Sandalwood spotlight.

Who it suits

  • Anyone who wants a crowd-pleasing scent with no surprises
  • Summer, holidays, and anyone who wants their bathroom to smell like one
  • A good first bar if you are new to handmade soap and do not know what you like

Who should skip it

  • Anyone with a fragrance sensitivity — undisclosed blend, cannot be checked
  • Anyone avoiding shea butter
  • Anyone who finds sweet scents cloying. Lemongrass & Sage is the bright, dry alternative.

A note on coconut allergy

Coconut allergy is uncommon but real. If you have one, note that coconut oil is in essentially every bar in this range, not only this one — so the bar name is not the thing to check. Read the base oils on any bar you are considering, here or anywhere else.

Care

Warm water, work into a lather, cleanse wet skin, rinse thoroughly, keep dry between uses. For external use only; avoid the eyes; rinse with clean water if contact occurs; discontinue use if irritation occurs.
