Pure3 Whey Isolate: The Name Means Three Ingredients — And That Is the Whole Point

Pure3 Vanilla and Pure3 Chocolate — $49.86, 24.1 oz, about 28 servings.

The name is the specification

The entire ingredient list is whey protein isolate, natural flavors, stevia extract (leaf). Three things. That is where "Pure3" comes from, and it is the clearest product name in our catalogue.

Compare it with Advanced Whey, which adds MCT oil powder, apple pectin, sunflower lecithin, sea salt and silicon dioxide. Those are not bad ingredients — lecithin aids mixing, pectin affects texture — but if your preference is the shortest possible list, Pure3 is the one.

The serving size difference people miss

This catches people out when they compare labels:

Pure3 Advanced Whey
Serving 1 scoop (24.4 g) 2 scoops (34 g)
Protein 19 g 22 g
Calories 90 120
Servings ~28 24
Price $49.86 $49.90
Ingredients 3 8
Added micronutrients Trace only Vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium

One scoop of Pure3 is a full serving. One scoop of Advanced Whey is half a serving. If you scoop by habit rather than by label, you will under-dose one and over-dose the other.

Cost per gram of protein

$49.86 ÷ 28 servings = $1.78 per serving ÷ 19 g = about 9.4¢ per gram of protein.

Which is — remarkably — the same as Advanced Whey (9.5¢) and PlantFuel (9.4¢). All three of our proteins cost essentially the same per gram. Price is not the deciding factor anywhere in this range; ingredients and allergens are.

It contains milk

Stated on the label: Contains milk. Whey is milk-derived. If you have a milk allergy, this is not for you — PlantFuel is the milk-free protein in our range.

If you are lactose intolerant, whey isolate is the lowest-lactose form of whey and many people tolerate it. "Many people" is not "you", and the only way to know is to try a small amount.

Sweetened with stevia only

No sucralose, no acesulfame potassium — just stevia extract from the leaf. Worth knowing in both directions: if you avoid artificial sweeteners, that is a point in its favour; if you dislike the aftertaste stevia leaves for some people, that is a reason to be aware before buying a 28-serving tub.

The panel

Per scoop (24.4 g): 90 calories · 0.5 g fat · 2 g carbohydrate (2 g sugars) · 19 g protein (36% DV) · 55 mg sodium · 110 mg potassium · 97 mg calcium · 109 mg phosphorus · 16 mg magnesium · 2.5 mg cholesterol.

Those minerals are naturally occurring in whey rather than added.

How to use it

One scoop with 6–8 oz of water or a beverage of your choice, daily. The label also suggests 20–30 minutes before a meal with 8 oz of water, or as directed by a healthcare professional.

Protein supports muscle growth and repair after exercise, alongside appropriate training and diet.* It does not guarantee muscle gain or weight loss, and the label does not claim it does.

Do not exceed the recommended dose. Consult a physician before use if pregnant, nursing, under 18, or if you have a medical condition.

Which of our four proteins should you buy?

  • Shortest ingredient list: Pure3 — 3 ingredients, 19 g
  • Most protein per serving and added micronutrients: Advanced Whey — 22 g
  • No milk: PlantFuel — 20 g from fava bean and nutritional yeast
  • Chocolate rather than vanilla: all three come in chocolate too
