Rich Sandalwood Soap — $14.99, 4 oz. Five ingredients, a warm woody scent, and nothing complicated.
What is in it
Saponified Oils (Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Organic Palm Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Shea Butter), Fragrance.
That is the entire list. The standard SoftWell cold-process base, plus scent.
What "Fragrance" actually tells you, which is not much
This is worth understanding across every product you own, not just this one.
On a cosmetic label, "Fragrance" (or "Parfum") is a permitted catch-all. It can cover a blend of many individual aroma compounds, and manufacturers are not required to break them out — the blend is treated as proprietary. So when a label says Fragrance, you are being told that the product is scented, and nothing else.
That is not sinister, and it is not a loophole we are exploiting. It is how nearly all scented soap is labelled, including most bars you would buy anywhere. But you deserve to know what the word does and does not disclose:
- It does not mean synthetic. Fragrance blends can contain natural materials.
- It does not mean natural either. It simply is not specified.
- If you have a known fragrance allergy, an unspecified blend is one you cannot check — so this is not the bar for you.
Which SoftWell bars name their scent, and which do not
| Named essential oils | Undisclosed "Fragrance" |
|---|---|
| Breathe Clear (5 oils) | Rich Sandalwood |
| Calming Lavender | Coconut Beach |
| Slumber | Aloe & Cool Cucumber |
| Lemongrass & Sage |
If full scent disclosure matters to you, the left column is where to look. If you just want the bar to smell good, the distinction does not affect you.
On sandalwood specifically
The label says Fragrance, and the product description calls it a "sandalwood-inspired fragrance profile." We are not claiming this contains sandalwood essential oil. Genuine sandalwood oil is among the most expensive materials in perfumery and is subject to real sourcing and sustainability pressure; a $14.99 bar built on it would not be a $14.99 bar. What you are buying is a warm, woody scent in that family, which is exactly what most sandalwood soap on the market is.
We would rather tell you that than let you assume otherwise and feel misled later.
Who it suits
- Anyone who wants warm and woody rather than fresh or floral
- Anyone looking for a bar that reads unisex — this is the most broadly appealing scent in the range
- Guest bathrooms, where you want something pleasant and uncontroversial
Who should skip it
- Anyone with a fragrance sensitivity, because the blend is not disclosed and therefore cannot be checked
- Anyone avoiding shea butter — see Lemongrass & Sage
- Anyone who wants unscented. No bar in this range is unscented.
Care
Warm water, thick lather, rinse thoroughly, keep dry between uses on a draining dish. For external use only; avoid the eyes; discontinue if irritation occurs.
