Ginkgo Biloba + Ginseng: Do They Raise Blood Pressure? Or Just Raise Eyebrows?
Let’s be honest—some of us hear “Ginkgo and ginseng” and think we’re about to unlock the secrets of ancient wisdom and superhuman focus. Others might think, “Wait... will this mess with my blood pressure?”
We get it. When you're trying to level up your wellness routine, the last thing you want is an unexpected side effect. So let’s talk about what science says (in plain language), and whether this dynamic herbal duo is really something to worry about—or just something to watch mindfully.
The Real Tea on Blood Pressure (a.k.a. What Research Says)
- A study of over 3,000 older adults found that 240 mg of Ginkgo biloba every day didn’t really move the needle on blood pressure—up or down (JAMA, 2010).
- In fact, one study found that Ginkgo might even help keep your BP steady during stressful moments—a win if your job involves lots of “deep breaths” and tight deadlines (MDPI, 2023).
- Ginseng? A little spicier. Some people see slight drops in pressure, others notice a small bump (around 5 mmHg in diastolic), especially with higher doses (ReliasMedia, 2021).
- As for combining the two? Well… science is still catching up. No major red flags so far—but not a ton of deep data either.
The Bottom Line: Chill, But Check In
If you’re generally healthy and not on any major medications, it’s pretty rare for Ginkgo and ginseng to throw your blood pressure off. Most people do just fine. But everybody’s body is different—so it’s smart to stay aware, listen to your body, and check in with your BP monitor every now and then.
Curious? Try it! If you feel good, keep it in your routine. If something feels off, you’ve learned something—and there are plenty of other herbs in the garden.
Discussion Questions to Reflect On:
- Do current studies suggest that concerns about blood pressure are overstated for most people?
- Should herbal combinations like Ginkgo and ginseng be treated with the same scrutiny as pharmaceuticals?
- How much do personal experience and intuition matter when science is still catching up?
- Would you feel comfortable trying this combo if your blood pressure was normal, or would you wait for more evidence?
